COLLEGES: USC RUNNERS SHINE BRIGHT ON RAINY DAY.

USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  freshmen runners Sarah Cocco and Zsofia Erdelyi took two of the top three spots Saturday at the Pepperdine Cross Country Invitational, but the Trojans couldn't match the depth of Cal State L.A., which won the team competition with 64 points.

Cocco covered the 6,000-meter layout in 20minutes flat, to finish ahead of Cal State L.A. senior Carla Alburez (20:18.10). It was Cocco's second consecutive victory, following a come-from-behind win Sept. 15 at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. .

The efforts of Cocco, Erdelyi (third, 20:29.85), Laura Meyers (19th, 21:20.94) and Bridget Helgerson (20th, 21:24.76) helped USC finish third (75).

, led by former Saugus High standout Shannon Murakami's 11th-place showing (21:07.32), finished eighth (177). Hannah Roeder (35th, 22:00.50) was the Bruins' second runner.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

UCLA wins Pepperdine Invitational: Evan Watchempino took runner-up honors, leading seven UCLA freshmen placing in the top 18, as the Bruins captured the team title with 39 points.

Watchempino clocked 24 minutes, 26.60 seconds on the 8,000-meter course to finish just behind Fresno State's Erick Garcia (24:25.23).

Dylan Knight (fourth, 24:51.83), Spencer Knight (sixth, 24:53.97) and Kent Morikawa (11th, 25:18.38) provided strong support for Watchempino. Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  graduates Jun Reichl (16th, 25:30.21) and Danny Benson (17th, 25:36.08) were packed with Marc Hausmaninger (18th, 25:36.84) as the Bruins had all seven athletes finish before Fullerton's fifth runner.

Cal State Northridge's Manuel Ruiz Manuel Ruiz Pérez (born December 3, 1962 in Jerez de la Frontera) is a Spanish football coach and former player.

During his football career, he played for several clubs including his childhood club Xerez CD, UD Melilla and Sanluqueño.
 (26:10.55) and Diego Fernandez (26:11.34) finished 32nd and 33rd. Seth Allison was Pepperdine's top finisher (41st, 26:33.76).

MEN'S WATER POLO water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in.  

UCLA 12, UC Irvine 11 (3 OT): Justin Johnson scored the winning goal with 1:29 remaining in sudden-death overtime to lead the host Bruins past sixth-ranked UC Irvine (4-3).

 led No. 3 UCLA (8-1) with five goals, the last coming in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 9-8. Ben Hohl tied the score with 42seconds remaining to force overtime.

UCLA took a brief lead in the first three-minute extra period, before the Anteaters tied the score at the 1:47 mark in the second overtime. Johnson scored his first goal less than a minute later to give the Bruins another advantage, but Tim Hutten scored his match-leading seventh goal for UC Irvine to force the three-minute sudden-death period.

USC 10, Pepperdine 4: The top-ranked Trojans broke a halftime tie by outscoring the No. 5 Waves 7-1 in the final 16 minutes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation is a college athletic conference whose member teams are located in the western United States. The conference participates in the NCAA's Division I.  opener for both teams.

Grant Miller scored three goals for Pepperdine (11-3), the last coming with 2:54 remaining in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 5-4. Five different players responded with goals for USC, as the Waves were held scoreless the rest of the way.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Poly 3, CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  0: Angela Hupp (Paraclete of Lancaster) recorded seven kills, 16 assists and five digs for the visiting Matadors in the 30-23, 30-22, 30-18 Big West Conference setback against No. 20 Cal Poly (8-6, 2-0).

Val Kepler recorded nine kills and four blocks, Alex Johnson (Westlake) added eight kills and nine digs, and Kayla Wright contributed 16 assists and five digs for the Matadors (4-10, 1-1).

MEN'S SOCCER

Santa Clara 2, UCLA 1 (OT): Jeff Cosgriff scored in the 91st minute to lead No. 8 Santa Clara (5-1-2) to the come-from-behind home victory.

Senior defender Mike Zaher scored in the 38th minute for the fifth- ranked Bruins (3-3-1), but Peter Lowry netted the equalizer in the 86th minute to force overtime.
