COLLEGES: PEPPERDINE HANGS ON FOR VICTORY.

The Pepperdine men's basketball team held off Santa Clara 64-58 Saturday night in a West Coast Conference game at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Santa Clara (12-12, 4-5 WCC) pulled to within two points, 60-58, with 25.8 seconds left when John Bryant made one of two free throws. But Rico Tucker converted one of twofree throws with 24.9 seconds left to make it 61-58, and after the Broncos' Jonathan Gunderson missed a driving layup, Ryan Holmes made a free throw 13 seconds left to give the Waves (9-17, 3-7 WCC) at 62-58 lead.

Pepperdine got a steal and basket with three seconds left for the final score.

Women's basketball

Pepperdine 71, Saint Mary's 64: Miranda Ayim had 19 points and 18 rebounds to lead the visiting Waves (6-18, 2-9 West Coast Conference) to the victory over the Gaels, snapping a seven-game losing streak.

Daphanie Kennedy had 20 points for the Waves.

UC Riverside 71, CSUN 51: The Matadors fell to 0-21 overall and 0-11 in the Big West Conference with the loss, while UCR improved to 11-11 overall and 8-2 in conference.

Softball

CSUN splits two: The Matadors (2-6) defeated Seton Hall 7-6 and lost to UNlV 6-5 in nine innings on the second day of the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic at Las Vegas.

In the win over Seton Hall, CSUN trailed 6-4 after four innings but scored a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Jaclyn Rymer scored from second base on a grounder to second base by Lauren Olivas for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

In the loss to UNLV, the Matadors led 5-3 in the seventh but the Rebels scored twice to send the game into extra innings, and then UNLV scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to win. Tracy Allen, Karen Fraggi and Micah Putnam each drove in a run for CSUN.

Men's volleyball

UCLA 3, Hawaii 0: D.J. Stromath had 12 kills to lead the fifth-ranked Bruins (10-5, 7-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) to the victory over Hawaii (4-7, 3-5) in a match played late Friday in Honolulu.

With the victory, UCLA avenged a five-game loss to the Warriors on Thursday night.

Jamie Diefenbach had 11 killds and Sean O'Malley had 10 kills for the Bruins.

Pepperdine 3, UC San Diego 0: Paul Carroll had 17 kills to lead the No. 7-ranked Waves (7-5, 7-5 MPSF) to the victory over the Tritons (4-10, 1-10).

Setter Jonathan Winder had 43 assists for the Waves.

CSUN 3, Lewis (Ill.) 0: Eric Vance had 16 kills to lead the Matadors (10-4) to the nonconference victory over Lewis (7-5).

Women's water polo

UCLA 10, CSUN 5: Kamaile Crowell, Jillian Kraus and Courtney Mathewson each scored three goals to lead the No. 1-ranked Bruins (12-0, 2-0 MPSF) to the victory over the No. 16 Matadors (3-4, 0-1).

Dayna Van Gorder scored two goals for CSUN, and Jessica Coy, Chelsea Curran and Renee Gargiulo each scored one goal.

USC 10, UC Irvine 3: Michelle Stein scored four goals and Alexandra Kiss and Jordan Anae each scored two goals to lead the No. 3-ranked Trojans (5-2, 1-0 MPSF) to the victory over the No. 10 Anteaters (4-3, 0-2).
