COLLEGES: CHAPPELL'S SHOW: UCLA JUNIOR GETS MEDALIST HONORS.

 junior Kevin Chappell won his second collegiate indvidual title in the final round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday at TPC (Transaction Processing Performance Council, San Francisco, CA, www.tpc.org) An organization devoted to benchmarking transaction processing systems. In order to derive the number of transactions that can be processed in a given time frame, TPC benchmarks measure the total performance of  Sawgrass Sawgrass can be:
  • A common name of some species of plants in the genus Cladium.
  • A town, Sawgrass, Florida.
  • Sawgrass Technologies, a manufacturer of printer inks in Charleston, South Carolina.
 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Chappell won medalist honors by firing a final round 3-under 69, despite a double-bogey at the 16th hole. Chappell's 54-hole total of 214 was 2 under. He beat Vanderbilt's Jon Curran by a stroke and Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson, the 16th-ranked player in the country, by two shots.

National Collegiate Athletic Association
 East Regional title at Lake Nona GC in Orlando, Fla.

As a team, the Bruins finished in a tie for fourth place at 899 (+35) with Central Florida and Alabama-Birmingham.

Behind freshman Carl Smith's 2-under par 70, Pepperdine carded a final- round 2-over 290 to finish with a 54-hole score of 46-over 910 and in 10th place.

Alabama won the event with a 54-hole total of 881 (+17).

MEN'S BASKETBALL

CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  64, South Dakota State 63: Junior Calvin Chitwood scored a team-high 18 points and Thomas Shewmake made a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left that proved to be the difference for the Matadors (13-14), who won their second road game this season.

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 6, USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  3: Matt Cusick went 3 for 4 and drove in the first two runs for the Trojans (7-6) in the first inning at Dedeaux Field.

The Anteaters got one run in the third and tied the score in the fourth, then took the lead for good in the sixth with two runs.

Long Beach State 14, UCLA 1: Brady Dolan drove in the only run for the visiting Bruins (6-4) and went 1 for 3. The Dirtbags scored eight runs in the eighth inning to snap UCLA's four-game winning streak.
