Gavin Brooks gave up just two runs on four hits in 8 1/3 innings Sunday as the No. 23-ranked UCLA baseball team defeated USC, 4-2, at Jackie Robinson Stadium to salvage the last game of the three-game series.

Alden Carrithers had two RBIs for the Bruins (14-12, 3-3 Pac-10), and Brandon Crawford went 2 for 4 with one RBI.

Brad Boxberger threw six innings for the Trojans (15-15, 4-5), allowing three runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Grant Green finished the series with eight hits after going 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI.

CSUN 8, Cal Poly 3: C.J. Belanger had three hits and two RBIs and Justin DeMarco also drove in two runs as the Matadors (13-13, 3-3 Big West) swept a conference series for the first time since 2004 with the victory over the Mustangs (9-17, 1-5 Big West).

Pepperdine 20, Saint Mary's 9: Eric Thames homered and drove in five runs, and Nate Simon also homered and drove in four runs to lead the No. 11 Waves (20-10, 3-2 West Coast Conference) to the victory over the host Gaels (16-12-1, 2-4).

Pepperdine starter Matt Bywater (Thousand Oaks High) got the victory to improve to 4-1. He allowed nine hits and four runs in five innings.

Softball

UCLA 5, Cal 0: Amanda Kamekona drove in three runs and Anjelica Selden pitched a five-hitter as the No. 1 Bruins (35-3 overall) improved to 7-0 in Pac-10 play for the first time since 1993 with the victory over the Golden Bears (32-15, 1-5).

Selden, who had 13 strikeouts, became the 15th Division I pitcher to reach 1,300 career strikeouts. Selden did not a walk a batter and improved to 17-2.

Long Beach State 1, CSUN 0: Brooke Turner pitched a four-hitter to lead the 49ers (29-10, 5-1 Big West) to the victory over the Matadors (14-18, 3-3). CSUN's Mercedes Lovato pitched a seven-hitter, allowing one run.
