VALENCIA - Going hybrid has made College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  $100,000 richer.

The college received that one-time rebate rebate, partial refund of the total price paid for goods or services. In the United States, rebates were historically given by railroads to favored shippers as a return on transportation charges.  from The Gas Company recently after participating in an energy-saving program that combined electricity with gas power for more than a year.

Under the utility's AB 970 Self Generation Incentive Program, the campus installed a natural gas-powered generator generator, in electricity, machine used to change mechanical energy into electrical energy. It operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction, discovered (1831) by Michael Faraday.  - a water heater that doubles as an electric generator - at the physical education complex. The system has offset college electricity use by about 3 percent, said Jim Schrage, dean of facilities planning.

``Co-generation units make more efficient use of our natural resources while providing operating-cost savings as well,'' he said. ``It saves money, saves wear and tear on equipment, along with time and maintenance.''

The system was installed in 2002 for $750,000, and more are on the way, Schrage said. It takes about five years for electricity cost savings to pay for the unit.

``All a company has to do is be connected to the grid and have the co-generation equipment installed on their side of the utility meter A utility meter is any of the following metering devices used on utility mains:
  • Electricity Meter
  • Water Meter
  • Gas Meter
,'' said Gas Company spokesman Tony Tartaglia in a statement. ``When the equipment begins to offset a portion of the facility's electric load, the incentives kick in.''
