COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: VOLLEYBALL TEAM STRONG OUT OF GATE.

Byline: GIDEON RUBIN Staff Writer

LANCASTER -- Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
College's women's volleyball team features just four returning players, of which only two were starters.

The Marauders don't have any particular areas of their game in which they excel, and they are still in the process of establishing roles.

So the best explanation longtime coach Jane Cwayna can come up with for AVC's strong start is cohesiveness.

AVC (1) (Advanced Video Coding) The video compression techniques used in the H.264 standard, jointly developed by ISO and the ITU-T. See H.264.

(2-2) has already won nonleague matches against Glendale and Pasadena and had success at two scrimmage tournaments. The Marauders were 6-4 at the Cuesta cuesta (kwĕs`tə), asymmetric ridge characterized by a short, steep escarpment on one side, and a long, gentle slope on the other. The steep side exposes the edge of erosion-resistant rock layers that form the cuestas.  of San Luis Obispo San Luis Obispo (săn l`ĭs ōbĭs`pō), city (1990 pop. 41,958), seat of San Luis Obispo co., S Calif., near San Luis Obispo Bay; inc. 1856.  tournament, and 5-3 at AVC's own tourney.

AVC's inexperience was apparent at the four-team Reedley tournament over the weekend, where it lost to the tourney champion De Anza of Cupertino and the host team in four games in both matches.

Cwayna is nevertheless pleased with the start.

``They're all getting along really well together,'' Cwayna said. ``I think we have the ability to do well this year.''

The Marauders' key returnees are setter/outside hitter Kristy Nua (Palmdale High) and outside hitter/middle blocker Helianna Plascencia (Palmdale).

Outside hitter Katie DeBord and defensive specialist Sam Baker Sam Baker is the name of:
  • Sam Baker (writer), author and former editor in chief of Cosmopolitan magazine
  • Sam Baker (football player) (1985- ), football player at USC
  • Sam Baker (American football player) (1930-200 ), NFL player in 1953, 1956-1969
 (Desert) are the other returnees.

Nua, whose older sister Jennie set multiple school records last season, was an all-tournament selection at Reedley and has emerged as a potential impact player.

Key newcomers include freshman setter setter: see sporting dog.

Other new additions are (all freshmen) libero Libero can refer to:

Cwayna said it's too soon to tell whether AVC can contend with perennial Foothill Conference powers San Bernardino Valley The San Bernardino Valley is the hub of Southern California's Inland Empire. It is drained by the Santa Ana River. It is bordered on the north by the San Bernardino Mountains and the eastern San Gabriel Mountains, on the east by the San Jacinto Mountains, and on the south and west  and Victor Valley.

She said she is working on blocking and defense, crucial to her team's development.

AVC is seeking its first conference title since 1993.

``We have a pretty new team on the floor, and they're doing well,'' Cwanya said.

Improvement:

Football coach Brent Carder said he saw significant improvement in all aspects of his team's game in Saturday's Week 2 20-9 loss to Glendale.

But he cited attitude and perseverance among the things that pleased him the most, qualities that he said were exemplified in a 12-play scoring drive late in the game -- AVC's first touchdown this season.

The drive was highlighted by an exceptional leaping catch by Tristan Moncrief, who pulled the ball out of the hands of a Glendale defender in the middle of the field and raced out of bounds to stop the clock. The play went for 36 yards and set up a Brad Kostopoulos (Boron) scoring run from the 2.

AVC (0-2), which extended its school record losing streak to 18 games, has played two of the state's top programs.

Reedley, which beat AVC in its season opener 45-6 is ranked No. 3 in the state. Glendale is ranked No. 16.

``Given our level at this point right now, I'm not upset,'' Carder said. ``I certainly would have liked to have won those games, but I think we've found some of the qualities that you look for in a football team. The positive attitude and perseverance are there.''

Injury update:

AVC will be without three starters for Saturday's Foothill Conference opener against Southwestern of Chula Vista Chula Vista (ch`lə), city (1990 pop. 135,163), San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1911. .
