COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD: USC-UCLA MEET BECOMES A MATTER OF INCHES.

Byline: JILL PAINTER Staff Writer

The length of a long jump in Saturday's USC/UCLA meet at Drake Stadium Drake Stadium is a stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. It is primarily used for the Drake Relays, and is the home field of the Drake University Bulldogs. It opened in 1925 and currently holds 14,557 people. A large scale renovation of the stadium was completed in 2006.  has plenty of local track and field fans in a tizzy tiz·zy

Jesse Williams (born 27 December 1983) is an American high jumper.

He finished fourth at the 2002 World Junior Championships and eighth at the 2006 World Athletics Final.
said he was told he jumped 7 meters, 38 centimeters (24-feet 2 1/4 inches), which would have won the meet for the Trojans.

However, Williams' jump was recorded at 23-11 1/4. It's possible it was announced wrong at the long jump pit and really was 24-2 1/4. It's possible it was recorded wrong on the score sheet and in fact would've been a winning jump at 24-2 1/4.

No one seems to know for sure.

Allice has not filed a protest and said he won't. However, he said he is waiting until today to talk to USC athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Mike Garrett, who was out of town for Pac-10 meetings, about the situation.

Allice acknowledged that it might be too late to change anything.

"I don't think there was any collusion," he said. "I think there was an error made. I think it was absolutely a mistake, whoever recorded what the official said. This was not the same thing everybody else heard her say. Jesse heard it. The person who operated the sign heard it. It was communicated to the press box."

at the idea the Bruins might not have won the meet or there was any error.

"I feel this cheapens and demeans the meet," Venegas said. "That there would even be a question. ... Grow up. Get over it, people. The meet was won by UCLA."

When it was announced at the meet that Easterling won the event, Allice figured he bettered Williams mark. Allice said he went back to his office, looked at the official results sheet, and was surprised to see 23-11 1/4.

On Monday, he called UCLA for copies of the original score sheet. The sheets were thrown away and Venegas, who said he was panicked because there would be no other way for them to prove Williams mark was 7 meters, 30 centimeters, sent a crew out to the stadium to retrieve the score sheets. They were found in a trash can, although they were wet and had to dry before UCLA could fax them. The score sheets and official sheets match with a metric mark of 7-30 (or 23-11 1/4).

"If there was some way of finding out what really happened, that would be great," Williams said. "If it's a lost cause, I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

what could be done. I'm happy either way. If I jumped 23-11, I'd just like to know. I just wish it wasn't me."

Scott Davis, a longtime track announcer, said his spotter could have relayed the wrong information up to the press box. It happens often at track meets. He said when he got the corrected jump, he made the change.
