The new library covers 27,222 square feet and offers circulation, reference and multimedia services, an on-line catalog catalog, descriptive list, on cards or in a book, of the contents of a library. Assurbanipal's library at Nineveh was cataloged on shelves of slate. The first known subject catalog was compiled by Callimachus at the Alexandrian Library in the 3d cent. , computer-assisted design and media arts. It will house art galleries and radio, television and film facilities. Students and residents will have access to computer-assisted drafting, cinema, labs, production and editing facilities, a screening room and displays of student work.

Both facilities were designed by Spencer/Hoskins Associates architects and built by C.M. West. Construction began in January 1995 and the buildings are due to open Jan. 21.

The new buildings are touted as state-of-the-art facilities that will enhance the college's ability to deliver cutting-edge services.

``The walk-through provides key members of our community with an opportunity to tour our new facilities before they are fully occupied - at a time when the incredible potential for all that the facilities can offer is most apparent,'' said college President Dianne Van Hook.

Kathleen Maloney, executive director of the college foundation, encouraged residents to consider donating money to equip the library. The state funded the construction but did not provide money for books. Thus the college is trying to raise about $1 million to buy an additional 30,000 books.

``It takes more than new buildings to provide the high-quality education services this community wants and deserves,'' Maloney said. ``The foundation is working on building an endowment fund Noun 1. endowment fund - the capital that provides income for an institution
