gem in the community's back yard - that's how organizers of College of the Canyons' Discovery Night see their college. The two-hour event they have scheduled for Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m., is an open house for people who want to further their education.

``I think we have a real treasure up here, and I think a large percentage of our community doesn't know that,'' COC See chip on chip.  spokeswoman Sue Bozman said. ``It's an opportunity for people to come discover what the college has to offer.''

Discovery Night's organizers hope the event will attract new residents, recent high school graduates and those looking to continue their education.

``When people start college it could be an intimidating in·tim·i·date

experience,'' Bozman said. A campus event such as Discovery Night is meant to ease the transition.

Tables will be set up in the cafeteria, where community members can meet COC's staff and discuss academic programs, career training, sports, transfer programs and financial aid.

``We have been creating new academic programs in computer networking

During Discovery Night, attendees may tour the library, visit classes in session and even submit applications to enter the college. Registration will be held later in the year.

Officials hope familiarity with the campus and the opportunity to meet some of the faculty and staff will enhance the college experience for prospective COC students.

``This will make them more comfortable when they come to register,'' Bozman said.
