COLLEGE TO GIVE GRADS SEND-OFF.

Nearly 250 Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California.  students are planning to don traditional caps and gowns today and walk to their futures at the school's 32nd annual graduation ceremony.

Delivering the commencement address will be Glen Becerra, who graduated in 1991 from the college that he credits with giving him a second chance at education after he was not too academically inclined at Simi Valley High School Simi Valley High School is a secondary school located in Simi Valley, California which was established in 1920 as the first high school in the valley. It nestles in the Santa Susana Mountains and is adjacent to the San Fernando Valley, part of the city and county of Ventura. .

``I always say Moorpark College saved me,'' said Becerra, 32, a businessman who was elected to the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  City Council in November. ``I wasn't focused on the academics.''

Becerra said he will try to convey his sense of gratitude and confidence in the programs at the two-year college to those gathered for the ceremony.

About 1,500 students, faculty and family members are expected at the commencement.

The 1998-1999 graduating class consists of 897 students - 569 women and 328 men. Some have already graduated at the end of the summer and fall terms, and about 250 are expected to join in ceremonies today.

Among the graduates are those who have achieved academic distinction - 178 have earned grade-point averages of 3.5 or above and 13 have achieved a GPA GPA

In addition, dozens of students will receive special awards, including the college's top two prizes - the President's Award The President's Award may mean:
  • Gaisce - The President's Award, Republic of Ireland
  • NAACP Image Award - President's Award, United States
  • Rashtrapati Award - Award given by the President of India (Rashtrapati is Hindi for President)
, which will go to Elyse Sparks, and the Dean's Award, which will go to Dominic Daurio.

Most of those graduating have earned science or associate of arts Associate of arts and Associate of science are two-year undergraduate degrees offered by many community colleges or junior colleges in the United States. Such degrees transfer to four-year institutions which offer full bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees.  degrees in courses such as business, liberal arts, accounting, biology and nursing. Others have earned degrees in occupational programs such as animal training, business information systems, child development and interior design.

An awards ceremony will be held at the Performing Arts Center A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre.  at 2 p.m. The commencement ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Campus Center Quad at the college, 7075 Campus Road, Moorpark.
