So will Highland's Lawrence Jarvey, who became his school's first qualifier for the Southern Section final.

As for Jeff Osborn of Flintridge Prep in La Canada, well, this Rebel is heading south.

Osborn, one of the most successful players produced at one of the area's tiniest high schools (290 students), begins classes today at Tulane, where, weather permitting and in the opinion of his high school coach, he'll shoot his way into the starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

``He'll make that team,'' said Flintridge Prep coach Bob Loughrie, who watched Osborn finish fifth in the Southern Section as a sophomore and sixth in CIF/SCGA as a senior. ``He'll will himself to make it because of the challenge, and he'll fit it in and get straight A's. He's always been able to have his priorities.''

Speaking by telephone Tuesday from New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded , Osborn sounded more concerned about whether it would ever stop raining long enough for him to practice for the five-round team qualifying competition scheduled to start Thursday.

``It's raining now,'' he said. ``It seemed fine this morning and we were going to play but after three holes there was all this lightning.''

Osborn said golf ranks behind baseball and football on the Tulane buzz scene, but he's happy there after opting for the Green Wave because he liked coach Tom Shaw Tom Shaw is the name of:

and he felt it was a school where he could play as a freshman.

``I wasn't even thinking about them,'' Osborn said, ``and then I met the coach at a tournament. He's a good guy - right up my alley, personality-wise. He's new himself this past year, but he's going to try and turn it around a little bit. They haven't been that great, but they got a bunch of new recruits and they're thinking this year it could be better.''

Loughrie almost would guarantee it with Osborn in the picture - and not even so much for his graduated captain's considerable golf skills, which this summer produced a top-10 finish in an American Junior Golf Association The American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) is a "501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.  event and low-amateur honors in the State Open.

``He was a lot of things to Flintridge Prep,'' said Loughrie, who long ago had a spot reserved for his four-year starter on the Rebels' golf Wall of Fame. ``He was an honor student, a peer counselor. ... He did so many things, golf was just one of the sidelights, really.

``His leadership is going to be so hard to replace. I think I'm going to have a real good team next year, and a lot of that is because he helped set the table.''
