VALENCIA - College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  student Devin Mills got a letter from President George W. Bush recently, and it wasn't a plea for donations or for his vote.

Instead, the commander in chief was congratulating Mills for being selected to receive the Presidential Freedom Scholarship for his service to the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. ``In his junior and senior years when he was playing football, he became a volunteer at the club and started coaching basketball and some other teams,'' said Jim Ventress, chief professional officer for the club. ``He is a good role model for them, and they just love him. For a big, tough football player, he's a big teddy bear.''

``I've been going to the club since I was in sixth grade,'' Mills said. ``I went there to do my homework and play games, and then I started helping them out, coaching with my dad. Our basketball team came in first place. We did a street hockey street hockey

``Community service is an integral part of what it means to be an American citizen,'' said David Eisner, chief executive officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service, in a prepared statement. ``The Presidential Freedom Scholarship program is an excellent way to recognize young adults who are exercising their duty with distinction.''

``I really enjoy working with kids and helping out,'' Mills said. Along with attending Canyons, he works at Mitchell Community School in the after-school day-care program, where he supervises children on the playground and helps them with their homework. He also helps the Boys & Girls Club set up fund-raisers and programs.

``When I was younger, a lot of people helped me out, in sports and everything. I want to be a football or baseball coach so I can teach them the proper technique, just like I was taught from my dad and other coaches. I just want to return the favor.''

Devin's father, Dave, is especially proud of his son.

``Devin would help with summer camps when I worked for the city parks,'' he said. ``He helped me coach softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. He's always enjoyed working with the kids. He just wants to give back what he's received growing up.''
