``I just called some local organizations, and they sent me a list of families that needed help, and we went from there,'' Hernandez said. ``We had a great turnout. A lot of people really wanted to help.''

``We do it for the spirit of giving,'' said Wilda Wallace, job placement officer at Antelope Valley College. ``It's just nice to give back.''

This was the second drive that Antelope Valley College staffers have undertaken this holiday season. In early November, Hernandez contacted the Grace Resource Center food bank to inquire about how college employees could help.

In just under a two-week period, all three barrels provided by the center were filled with food to be distributed to needy families.

Angela McClain, share program coordinator for Families Caring for Families, attended with a family designated to be the recipient of some of the presents.

``If it wasn't for people like these at Antelope Valley College, these kids truly wouldn't have a Christmas,'' McClain said. ``It's so nice to see that people really do care.''
