Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer

Everyone associated with the Cal State Northridge softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team is absolutely giddy about Scia Maumausolo becoming the school's career home runs record-holder, which she did March 2 with her 34th.

Everyone, it seems, except Maumausolo.

"I sit there and tell her, 'Oh my God, you broke the record,' " fellow senior Jennifer Richardson said Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week.  after the Matadors swept visiting Colorado State 1-0 and 3-0 in a doubleheader that was Northridge's home opener and its Western Athletic Conference The Western Athletic Conference (commonly referred to as the WAC, pronounced "wack") was formed on July 27, 1962, making it the sixth oldest of the 11 college athletic conferences currently participating in the NCAA's Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly  opener.

"That's a big record to break," said Richardson, a pitcher, who improved to 8-2 on the season with the victory in the first game. "(But) I don't think she cares about those things."

She doesn't.

"I don't really know that I am (breaking records)," said Maumausolo, whose fourth-inning home run was the only run of the first game and whose two doubles drove in Northridge's first two runs in the second game.

Maumausolo, who now has 36 career homers and nine this season, was 4 for 6 Sunday. The Matadors, 15-4 and ranked fifth in the nation, had just 10 hits in the two games.

"We can . . . depend on our defense this year," Maumausolo said.

Defense was not much of an issue in the second game, as freshman pitcher Tara Glaister struck out 10 and allowed just two hits for the win.
