COLLEGE SOCCER: DRAW FOR CSUN, UCLA MATADORS STILL IN SEARCH OF 1ST WIN VS. BRUINS.

Byline: SCOTT FRENCH Staff Writer

Cal State Northridge is the likeliest contender for UCLA's chief rival in men's soccer, a position that once upon a time was occupied by Cal State Fullerton but has sat dormant since the Titans' demise after reaching the NCAA NCAA

The Matadors seemingly have everything required: a ton of talent, a regular spot in the rankings and a growing tradition of success, with two of the past three Big West Conference titles and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance last season.

But crucial in any rivalry is some sense of back-and-forth; each side needs to win, at least on occasion, and after Saturday night's 1-1 draw in a season opener at UCLA's Drake Stadium Drake Stadium is a stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. It is primarily used for the Drake Relays, and is the home field of the Drake University Bulldogs. It opened in 1925 and currently holds 14,557 people. A large scale renovation of the stadium was completed in 2006. , CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  is still seeking its first victory over the Bruins.

The Matadors keep coming close. Two years ago at Drake, Daniel Drake, Daniel (1785–1852) physician, author; born near Plainfield, N.J. He studied medicine in Cincinnati, Ohio, and spent most of his life in practice and teaching there.  Paladini provided an advantage, but UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

 rallied for a 3-1 triumph.

Last year in Northridge, a 0-0draw ended the Bruins' 12-game winning streak in the series. On Saturday, Ryan Rossi scored an early goal, CSUN came close another half-dozen times, and a solid defensive effort -- especially by Derek Hanks (El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

``Going to UCLA ... they have, what, four national championships?'' CSUN coach Terry Davila said. ``It's not the result we wanted, but it's a result we'll take.''

Hanks' long ball, nodding it to Matadors freshman Sunghyun Kim, who headed it down and fed Rossi, whose volley left goalkeeper Eric Reed no chance.

Kim and Rossi, CSUN's top returning scorer, nearly hooked up again three minutes later, and Hanks challenged Reed with a header four minutes after that. Greg Folk (Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks) netted the Bruins' goal, finishing Sal Zizzo's feed in the 26th minute.

UCLA's possession game set the tone, leading to chances at both ends, with the Bruins, primarily through Zizzo and freshman Kyle Nakazawa, finding paths to CSUN's box and the Matadors feeding their counter with midfield defense. CSUN's offense lost some spark after Kim, a freshman who played for South Korea's U-15 national team, departed with a knee injury after 27 minutes.
