``We know that part of our community needs the educational access, so it's a necessary service for the whole valley,'' said college spokeswoman Sue Bozman, adding that the center should also help reduce cross-town cross·town or cross-town

The college is soliciting proposals from landowners and developers for about 50 acres for the Canyon Country Educational Center, where students could complete general education or transfer requirements without having to visit the Valencia campus.

At the facility, students could see counselors and access records, although it will not be a full campus that includes a stadium or physical education building.

The college expects the satellite center to open with modular facilities in spring 2005 with 2,467 students. In 2010, enrollment could be about 2,727 and when the facility builds out by 2015, officials estimate there will be 3,518 students.

The College of the Canyons' Valencia campus, which now has 13,000 students, expects also to be at maximum capacity by 2015. College officials plan to open additional centers to accommodate the growing student population.

The college's Canyon Country access center at the Jo Anne Darcy Library - where classes filled immediately - will serve as an interim solution to serving students in the eastern part of town until the education center opens.

Those interested in working with the college to identify or offer property should submit a letter to Dianne Van Hook, Office of the President, College of the Canyons, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91355.
