That's not to say the Bruins are overlooking Loyola Marymount, their semifinal opponent. It's just that only four teams ever have played for the championship, and Stanford and UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

Men's tennis coach Dick Leach announced his resignation after 22 seasons and three national championships. He will step down June 1 but will remain on staff as emeritus director of men's tennis. Leach said the job has become difficult with just 4 1/2 scholarships.

Former men's basketball assistant Mike Johnson has accepted an assistant coaching job at UC Irvine, a year after ending a nine-year run as an assistant with the Matadors. He got out of coaching last season and moved to Noblesville, Ind., to be closer to his family. The softball team is in danger of missing the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 1991, the program's first season in Division I. After being swept at Utah State last weekend, the Matadors are 23-22 with six games to play. CSUN was 26-26 in 2000 and made a regional, so there's hope. But the six remaining games - three at home this weekend against third-place Long Beach State and three next weekend at Big West Conference-leader Pacific - aren't easy. And it will get worse if CSUN continues its hitting woes. In their past four games, the Matadors have scored five runs.

Center Ryan Sims will not return to the men's basketball team next season, coach Bobby Braswell said. Sims averaged 2.1 points and 3.1 rebounds last season.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT

For the second consecutive season, the women's water polo team has reached the NCAA Final Four. Five seniors largely are responsible: goalie Devon Courtney, leading scorer Lucy Windes, defenders Orla Stewart and Meredith Bellotti, and driver Caroline Guidi.

Fortunately for coach John Loghran, the cupboard hardly is empty. Sophomores Teresa Guidi and Jamie Kroeze and junior Julia Wald also can score.

The Lions will try to become the first non-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team to play for the national championship when they face UCLA in a semifinal May 11 at 5 p.m.

Senior Brad Keenan was chosen Player of Year, Sean Rooney was Freshman of the Year and Marv Dunphy won Coach of the Year for the first time.

The Waves left for the NCAA Final Four at Penn State on Monday, three days before its semifinal against Ball State. Dunphy thought it important to get there as soon as possible to get the players adjusted to the time change and environment.

Another reason the Waves left early: They could. School's out for the summer.
