Sophomore Tairia Mims, a four-position player on the softball team, was named Pac-10 Conference player of the week.

Mims, who plays first base, third base, right field and catcher for the Bruins, went 12 for 21 (.571) in six games last week and added six home runs, 19 RBI and 11 runs scored.

For the season, Mims is hitting .449 with eight home runs and 32 RBI. The Bruins, ranked No. 1 in the country, won all five of their games in last weekend's UNLV Classic and this week participate in the Texas Invitational with Cal State Fullerton, Texas and Wisconsin.

USC 

The women's water polo team takes a 6-0 record into this weekend's UC Santa Barbara Tournament, the Trojans' first true test of the young season.

The Trojans should be in line for a championship matchup against UCLA. The teams met last May for the NCAA championship, with the Bruins claiming the title.

USC, the 1999 national champion, has outscored its six opponents 67-28 but has not faced UCLA or Stanford, two of the sport's traditional powers. The Trojans have been led by Sofia Konoukh's 14 goals, followed by Aniko Pelle with 12 and Nina Wengst with 11.

CSUN 

The women's tennis team returns to Big Sky Conference competition with a road match Friday against Sacramento State.

The Matadors have started the season with eight consecutive victories, including a 4-3 Big Sky victory over Northern Arizona last month in their conference opener.

Friday's match starts a busy streak for the Matadors, who will play four matches in four cities in eight days, but Northridge has a lot of youthful energy. Freshmen Tia Kaasalianen and Gabriele Reiner and sophomore Tereza Simonyan are the Matadors' top three singles players, and all three had two-set victories Sunday in a 5-2 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

PEPPERDINE

Damaris Hinojosa, a sophomore guard on the women's basketball team and a former standout at Moorpark High, set one school record and tied another in the Waves' victory over Gonzaga on Saturday.

Hinojosa made seven 3-pointers against Gonzaga to tie the single-game record set by Samantha Rigley two seasons ago. That also brought her season total to 54, breaking the single-season record of 52 set by Rigley in 1997-98.

Hinojosa is averaging a team-high 14.1 points per game, along with 4.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT

LMU will add members to its Hall of Fame for the first time since 1994, with former men's basketball coach Paul Westhead being the most prominent name of the six-member class.

Westhead coached the Lions for five seasons, took them to within one game of the Final Four in 1990 and won a school-record 28 games in 1988. He is now coaching the L.A. Stars of the American Basketball Association.

The other inductees are Keith Smith, a basketball point guard from 1982-85; Lynn Flanagan (1987-91), the career points leader for the women's basketball team; former athletic director and men's basketball coach Brian Quinn; Karen Hock-Hjelm, one of the founding members of the women's crew team, and Miah Bradbury, the WCC player of the year in baseball in 1990.

The school will have a luncheon on campus Saturday to honor the inductees.
