COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CSUN DISCOVERS OFFENSE.

Byline: Daily News

Cal State Northridge exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to break open a scoreless tie, then made the lead stick, holding off host Loyola Marymount 5-4 Thursday afternoon.

Reliever Jason Cole struck out Mark Veranda with the tying run on third to preserve the dramatic win - coming on the heels of the Matadors' worst loss of the season, an 11-0 drubbing by University of San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. ``I thought Benny was outstanding,'' Northridge coach Mike Batesole said. ``We really needed this win.''

Red-hot Adam Kennedy got Northridge rolling with his 15th home run of the season to open the sixth.

Chris MacMillan, declared eligible the day of the game, drilled a two-run double off the wall to increase the lead to 4-0. Brain Wagner then added another run-scoring double.

``I was just notified that my appeal went through, so I wasn't even sure if I was going to be able to play,'' MacMillan said. ``It was a 3-2 curveball and I just turned on it.''

Loyola (7-13) totaled seven of its 12 hits in the last two innings.

Northridge is now 16-8-1.

Flores worked his way out of a jam in the third. Ed Marquez got aboard on an infield single and stole second. After leadoff hitter Matt Riordan walked, Marquez took third on Flores' errant pickoff pick·off

Flores got Mark Veronda to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to keep the game scoreless.

Flores again found himself in serious trouble in the fifth inning. John Cassanego singled, followed one out later by Kevin Gustart's shot single up the middle, advancing Cassanego to third, as Gustart took second on the throw. Flores escaped unharmed when Marquez struck out trying to bunt, and Cassanego was caught in a pickle for another rally-killing double play.

Northridge put runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings but came up empty each time. The Matadors had their best chance in the fifth when Adrian Mendoza doubled and took third on a balk balk

, but MacMillan and Brian Wagner each swung at high pitches for strikeouts, then leadoff hitter Andy Wilson took a called third strike to end the inning.

Flores tired in the eighth, yielding three earned runs on three singles, a walk, and a wild pitch. Curt Fiore's two-run single to right chased Flores.

``They just started hitting the ball to the right spots,'' Flores said. ``There was nothing I could really do about that.''
