COLLEGE ROUNDUP: UCLA'S STARS RETURN, WIN.

UCLA had its missing stars back Friday, and it made a huge difference. Danesha Adams and freshman Lauren Cheney, making their debuts after missing the season's first two weekends while on international duty, scored goals to lead the fifth-ranked Bruins to a 2-1 triumph over No. 4 Texas A&M in the UCLA Women's Cup.

Adams, winner of the Bronze Ball as third-best player at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Championship, gave UCLA a 14th-minute lead and her U.S. teammate Cheney scored the winner in the 78th minute.

Also back from the Americans' fourth-place finish in Russia were goalkeeper Val Henderson, defender Erin Hardy and midfielder Tina DiMartino.

No. 3 Santa Clara won the opener, beating Connecticut 2-1 in overtime.

No. 17 USC (3-1-1) drilled Drake 3-0 on goals by Rosa Anna Tantillo, Lauren Brown and Kelley Finch at the Nebraska Adidas Invitational.

Former Chatsworth High standout Lindsey Redlin scored her second goal of the season Pepperdine (3-1-1) beat visiting Tulsa 3-1.

Bruins notch first win: Former Highland High of Palmdale star Maxwell Griffin scored goals in the 57th and 59th minutes to lead UCLA's 10th- ranked men's soccer team to a 2-0 triumph over No.15 New Mexico, last year's NCAA runner-up, on the opening day of the Lobos' tournament.

Cal State Northridge (1-1-1) topped Oakland 2-0 in the first game on goals by Ryan Rossi and freshman Sunghyun Kim.

USC sweeps pair: USC's 10th-ranked women's volleyball team swept Florida State and South Carolina on the opening day of the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C. Asia Kaczor totaled 33 kills for the Trojans (8-0), who have won six matches by 3-0 scorelines.

Nana Meriwether had 22 kills with a .759 attack percentage to lead No. 3 UCLA (7-0) to a 3-1 win over Texas State at the Pioneer Classic in Denver.

Pepperdine (3-3), behind Rachel Lumsden and former Oaks Christian of Westlake Village standout Julie Rubenstein, swept American at the Golden Bear Invitational in Berkeley, and Cal State Northridge (3-3) opened the UNLV Invitational with a 3-0 triumph over Xavier.
