COLLEGE ROUNDUP: NO. 8 TEXAS TOO MUCH FOR PEPPERDINE.

Pepperdine pushed another top-10 opponent Friday night at the Asics Classic, but it fell to 0-3 with a four-game loss to visiting Texas.

The 19th-ranked Waves, the nation's tallest team, couldn't match up with No. 8 Texas' dominant front line, which received a combined 45 kills from Dariam Acevedo and Leticia Leticia (lātē`sēä), town (1993 pop. 17,758), capital of Amazonas commissary, SE Colombia, on the upper Amazon. The Leticia region, a narrow strip of land extending S of the Putumayo River to the Amazon, was disputed, at times violently, between Colombia and Peru (1932–34). Armstrong in a 33-35, 30-20, 30-27, 30-16 victory at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Pepperdine, which lost twice in five games last week at Hawaii, was led by Julie Rubenstein, who finished with 12 kills and 10 digs.

USC wins Classic opener: Diane Copenhagen had 11 kills and the Trojans (4-0) held Fresno State to a negative hitting percentage to romp 30-20, 30-10, 30-20 in an opener at the USC/LMU Classic women's volleyball tournament. Loyola Marymount (2-2) fell to Tennessee in four games.

Katie Carter had 10 kills to lead No. 10 UCLA (4-0) past Colorado 30-25, 30-25, 30-25 at the Hawaiian Airlines Classic in Honolulu. The 10th- ranked Bruins face Florida today and Hawaii on Sunday.

Larsen lifts Bruins: Freshman Kristina Larsen's ninth-minute goal carried UCLA's seventh-ranked women's soccer team (2-1-0) past visiting San Diego State 1-0. The Bruins, with five starters in Russia with the U.S. under-20 team, twice hit the woodwork.

Cal State Northridge (2-1-0) beat Alabama-Birmingham 1-0 on Sara Davis' 74th-minute penalty kick at the Oregon State Nike Invitational.

No. 17 USC (1-1-1) fell 2-0 at third-ranked Notre Dame, which received goals from Amanda Clark and Amanda Cinalli.

Emily Wynne scored two goals, but No. 20 Pepperdine (1-1-1) settled for a 2-2 draw with Dayton on day one of the Waves' Puma Classic.
