COLLEGE OFFERS CHANCES TO STUDY ABROAD.

VALENCIA - College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  is offering students an opportunity to study abroad in Italy from July 5 to 16.

 I and II and U.S. History I and II are being offered during a tour of Florence, Venice, Rome, Naples and Pompeii. History professors Brad Reynolds and Robert Cleve will be the tour guides and instructors.

"Studying these subjects in Italy allows students the amazing opportunity to visit historic places such as the Colosseum Colosseum or Coliseum (both: kŏləsē`əm), Ital. Colosseo, common name of the Flavian Amphitheater in Rome, near the southeast end of the Forum, between the Palatine and Esquiline hills.  and the Roman Forum, rather than relying on pictures in textbooks that cannot fully convey their grandeur and historical immortality," Reynolds said.

The trip costs $2,995 per person and includes 15 meals; transportation and transfers by motor coach in Italy; sightseeing tours, including the services of local guides and admission fees to museums; and 10 nights in first-class hotels.

Students must pay a $300 deposit by the end of March with the balance due April 20.

In addition, the College of the Canyons will also be offering a study tour of Nicaragua and Costa Rica Costa Rica (kŏs`tə rē`kə), officially Republic of Costa Rica, republic (2005 est. pop. 4,016,000), 19,575 sq mi (50,700 sq km), Central America. , scheduled for Aug. 6-17.

Students can earn up to nine units studying Spanish, history and biology during their seven-day stay in Nicaragua and five-day stay in Costa Rica.

"Studying abroad goes beyond academic enrichment," said Claudia Acosta, instructor and tour guide for the trip. "It is a transforming experience for students to realize that their social contributions are not limited to Santa Clarita alone, but can extend to the entire globe."

Students will attend a cultural event at the National Palace hosted by the secretaries of education and culture. Students also will visit the World Heritage Site and the ruins of Leon and stay in Granada, the oldest city in Latin America, and at San Juan Del Sur San Juan del Sur (sän hwän dĕl sr), town, SW Nicaragua, on the Pacific Ocean. , a beach on the south Pacific Coast.

In Costa Rica, students will stay at Tabacon Hot Springs and Tortuguero, and visit museums and take a boat ride to the Caribbean Tropical Rainforest.
