COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS NOTEBOOKA: RUNNING GAME SHOWS UP DEFENSE, SPECIAL TEAMS ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO COC ROUT.

VALENCIA - Three quarterbacks showed off their arms and reassured the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  football team it shouldn't suffer while starter Jason Winn remains sidelined.

COC (3-1) had run for just four touchdowns in its first three games but rushed for six against Santa Monica in a game in which 250 of the Cougars' 443 total yards were on the ground. Brignac, who entered the game with 98 yards and a touchdown this season, had 91 yards and two scores on five carries. J.J. Arrington also ran for two scores and 58 yards and Major Caldwell added 64 yards and a touchdown on a team-high 11 carries.

--Big returns: Cedric Thompson had to settle for putting the Cougars in good position when he returned kicks Saturday. Sophomore defensive back Darryl Murphy picked off a pass from Corsairs quarterback Boomer Welles and returned it 50 yards to give COC a 41-14 advantage in the second quarter.

Sophomore linebacker Joey LaPorte got the Cougars' final touchdown when he made an interception at the 50-yard line and returned it for a score with 8:16 remaining.

 Jason Daily was one of the few players not to get in on the football team's record-setting first half Saturday. The Cougars' offense moved the ball so successfully, COC did not punt the entire half.

Daily punted four times in the second half, averaging 42.2 yards.

Resendez wasn't the only one with reason to celebrate, though. The Cougars responded to their first winless week by coming back with two dominating matches last week. In the past, Hancock has provided some of COC's toughest games no matter what the Bulldogs' record. But last week, the Cougars beat Hancock 8-0.

The women's soccer team, which plays host to division rival Bakersfield on Friday, entered the week ranked No. 4 in Southern California, the highest of the four WSC teams in the poll. ...

The women's volleyball team has dropped out of the Southern California rankings.
