COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS NOTEBOOK: WOMEN'S SOCCER, FOOTBALL WILL MAKE WEEKEND A BUSY ONE.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - The College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  women's soccer team gets to play its first weekend home game, but the Cougars can't count on that boosting their fan base since COC See chip on chip.  sports fans have to choose between big games Saturday.

The Cougars' football team goes for a program-record ninth consecutive victory and an outright conference title that afternoon at Compton, and the women's soccer team is at home for the second round of the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  playoffs.

The football team already has secured at least a share of the Western State Conference Pacific Division title, but it needs a strong showing in the 1 p.m. regular-season finale against second-place Compton to earn a berth in a top bowl game and have any chance of playing for the state title.

The Cougars (8-1, 6-0) are ranked fifth in Southern California and likely would have to finish in the top two in the regional poll to have a chance at playing for the state championship.

The soccer team, which plays at 2 p.m. against Orange Coast, is seeded third in Southern California and looking to advance its farthest in the program's four years.

--Closing in on state title: Susan Latch was beatable, but the COC women's golf team was not. In a rare occurrence, neither Latch nor any of her teammates took medalist honors at Tuesday's Southern California finals, but the Cougars finished first as a team and advance to next week's state finals.

Latch, who repeated as the Western State Conference Player of the Year after winning last week's conference finals, took second Tuesday, three stokes Stokes , William 1804-1878.

Because the top two teams from regionals advance, COC (51-0) will have to beat Mt. SAC again if it hopes to win the state title. The Cougars finished second in the state last year.

Even though the Warriors were seeded 14th and the Cougars third, a tight match was expected, and is exactly what COC (20-1-2) wants as it tries to build credibility for its young program.

After edging an El Camino team that finished second in its conference behind defending state champion Long Beach, the Cougars can expect another tough match Saturday against No. 6 Orange Coast. Orange Coast is coming off a 2-0 victory over WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

``If we can make it through this, it's going to give us a stamp of legitimacy,'' COC coach Phil Marcellin said.
