When a team has as much talent as the College of the Canyons' men's golf team does, it's in for some surprises.

Freshman Edgar Reyes, struggling at season's start, the shot a 1-under-par 71 to win a Western State Conference match Monday at Tierra Rejada Country Club in Moorpark and help the Cougars catch nemesis Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  in the conference standings.

COC See chip on chip.  (20-4) finished second to host Moorpark in the team scoring and is knotted with Santa Barbara (20-4), which finished fourth, atop the WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

.

``(Reyes is) as talented as anyone else,'' coach Gary Peterson said. ``It's really a level of confidence. When you start to roll, you get more aggressive, more confident, and that's probably what happened out there.''

Reyes (Alemany High of Mission Hills) credits his teammates and the atmosphere within the program.

``It's been fun playing on this team,'' he said. ``That takes away some of the pressure.''

COC could take sole possession of first place Monday when it is host to a WSC match at TPC (Transaction Processing Performance Council, San Francisco, CA, www.tpc.org) An organization devoted to benchmarking transaction processing systems. In order to derive the number of transactions that can be processed in a given time frame, TPC benchmarks measure the total performance of  Valencia, its home course.

--All-WSC: Guards Derrick Williams Derrick Williams (born July 6, 1986) is an American football player at Pennsylvania State University.

Williams was widely regarded as one of the top high school football prospects of 2005, coming out of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland.
and Andre Murray accorded All-Western State Conference honors for men's basketball. Murray, a 6-foot-2 Cleveland of Reseda product, led COC in scoring, averaging 20 points per game. Williams, a 6-3 sophomore from Price High in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , averaged 14.8 points per game during the regular season.

--I know you: Freshman left-hander Mike Robbins, No. 2 in the baseball team's starting rotation, distinctly recognized two hitters when he faced Pierce College of Woodland Hills on Feb. 25.

Robbins, from Village Christian of Sun Valley, remembered playing against freshman Michael Notaro (Westlake) and sophomore Willy Cabrera (Chatsworth).

``I knew that they were good hitters,'' Robbins said. ``I got Willy (Cabrera) out, but I left a curveball up for Michael (Notaro). He got the best of me there.''

Notaro singled in his only at-bat against Robbins, who took the loss in the 12-1 defeat to Pierce. Cabrera went 0 for 1.

Robbins is the Cougars' top pitcher with a 4-2 record. He leads the team with 32 innings pitched.
