Much like race-car drivers, golfers know who's lurking in the rearview mirror, ready to make a move.

Santa Barbara's Chris Satterlee knows who College of the Canyon's Joe Greiner is.

Greiner, from Hart High, is making quite the impression as a freshman for the Cougars, and he sits just six strokes behind Satterlee in the Western State Conference individual standings with 36 holes remaining in conference play.

Greiner will have his chance Monday at Lost Canyons Golf Course in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. , and Canyons coach Gary Peterson thinks he has a good shot.

``He's got intestinal fortitude intestinal fortitude

,'' Peterson said. ``He's got a certain gritty approach that is very unusual for someone to come in and play as a freshman.''

``I'm really competitive, and I don't like to lose,'' Greiner said. ``I'm not trying to beat everyone. I'm being more competitive with myself.''

It helps explain why Greiner gave up on baseball when he was 13.

``I decided to play a sport where my mistakes are my mistakes,'' he said. ``I can't blame anyone but myself.''

Peterson says Greiner's and his teammates' inner-competitiveness is a reason the Cougars (45-5) have pushed past Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  (38-12) atop the the WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

``Most teams have two or three good golfers,'' Peterson said. ``We've got eight.''

``Everybody knows that they could be out of our top six with a bad round,'' Greiner said.

``It's pretty competitive.''
