College of the Canyons' men's golf team, ranked No. 2 in the state, used a 1-2 finish by Damian Yi and Joe Greiner to sneak past first-place Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  City (17-1) in a Western State Conference match at Santa Maria Santa Maria, city, Brazil

``If (Yi and Greiner) didn't play as well as they did,'' coach Gary Peterson said, ``we didn't have a prayer.''

Yi shot 2-under-par 70 and Greiner 1-over 73 as the Cougars (15-3) narrowed the gap to No. 5 Santa Barbara before a two-week break.

``The break is nice,'' Greiner said. ``We've been playing constantly since January.''

COC See chip on chip.  finished at 389, followed by Santa Barbara (396), Allan Hancock of Santa Maria (400), Moorpark (401), Ventura (405), Bakersfield (407) and Citrus of Glendora (416).

``I know (Santa Barbara) is a good team,'' Greiner said. ``I'm pretty sure they're playing their best right now, and we haven't played the way we're capable yet.''

Said Peterson: ``We've got to be better on the tail end (of matches) to consistently beat Santa Barbara.''

The Cougars' season resumes March 13 at Tierra Rejada Golf Club in Moorpark.

--Daunting task: COC's eighth-seeded women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. The Cougars (20-10) must contend with Lauren Ervin, the state's No. 3 scorer with a 19.3 points-per-game average. COC is led by Kelly O'Linn (Saugus High) and Janette Galindo (Burroughs of Burbank). Both scored 14 points in last weekend's 85-82 victory over Compton in the first round.

--Bright spot: Freshman guard Andre Murray (Cleveland of Reseda) enjoyed a fine year as COC men's basketball team reached the Southern California regionals for the third consecutive year.

Murray averaged 20 points per game, eight-best in the state, and was California's No. 3 freshman scorer, behind Citrus of Glendora's Rishawn Norwood (27.3) and Yuba of Marysville's Mareceo Rutledge.

Freshman Shant Bicakci (Saugus) ranked seventh in the state in assists, averaging 5.8 a game.
