The men's top runner, Salim Benmohammed, will also move on to the state meet for the first time with his mark of 22:34 at the Southern California Championship race. He finished 54th in a field of 195 runners.

Kane believes Benmohammed could move into the top-20 elite if he sheds his track tendencies and paces himself on the four-mile course.

``He was way back in the first mile,'' Kane said of his Southern California Championship race. ``He had to work his way back up front, but if he controls himself early and paces well, he'll get back to where he needs to be.''

Freshmen Jose Flores was the second men's runner to qualify last Friday with a time of 23:06 but the surprise was sophomore J.J. Getskow's 137th-place finish which eliminated him from State contention.
