COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS NOTEBOOK: CANYONS' QUIET RECORD-BREAKER.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

VALENCIA - The home run record for the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  baseball team might be one of the best-kept secrets around. The Cougars aren't sure if the player who set the record even knows about it. Sophomore infielder Francisco Enriquez made his way into the COC See chip on chip.  record books by slugging For the baseball statistic, see Slugging average.

19 home runs, but the Cougars would rather downplay the achievement, hoping neither Enriquez nor opponents will start approaching his at-bats differently.

``We didn't want to tell him,'' COC coach Chris Cota said. ``We didn't want him to change his swing trying to hit home runs. He still doesn't know. We won't say anything, we got that mojo going. He might know by now, but nobody else does.''

Enriquez's home run heroics are such a secret that the Western State Conference lists his total incorrectly in this week's release. He is listed as leading the conference with seven home runs during WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

--Another WSC leader: Sophomore outfielder David Decker has surpassed teammate Adam Rondou as the Cougars' leading hitter during conference. Decker entered the week batting a WSC-best .422 (.372 overall). He added three hits, including a double, in Tuesday's loss.

Rondou maintained COC's highest overall average at .394.

--Keeping it tight: Saturday's victory over first-place Citrus moved the Cougars baseball team into a first-place tie in the WSC South Division. COC had an ideal opportunity to extend its lead when it faced Citrus again Tuesday, the same day co-leader Glendale lost. However, the Cougars lost to form a three-way tie for the lead entering Thursday's game against last-place Valley.

``A lot of things can happen,'' Cota said.
