Although the Cougars had already clinched their second consecutive divisional title, they needed a victory to solidify their position for the regional playoffs. A win would also extend COC's divisional winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

The Cougars came through with an impressive 98-68 victory.

The victory helped COC See chip on chip.  (25-6, 12-0) nail down the No. 3 seed for the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  regional playoffs, which begin Friday.

The Cougars, who have a first-round bye, will host the winner of a Friday night game between No. 14 Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  (18-9) and No. 19 Victor Valley (18-13) on Feb. 27. With a victory on Tuesday, COC would host a regional final on March 2. The highest seed behind COC in the Cougars' bracket is No. 6 Cerritos (26-5).

Game times have not been determined.

The first two days of the women's state championship tournament are March 8-9 at San Joaquin Delta College San Joaquin Delta College is a community college in Stockton, California. The championship game is March 10 at University of Pacific in Stockton. The men's state championship tournament is at University of Pacific.

The top-seeded team in Southern California is defending state champion Ventura (28-4). Mt. San Antonio (27-5) is seeded No. 2 and Santa Ana (24-6) is seeded fourth.

how it's going to play out; all I know is we're at home (for both games) and we play pretty well there,'' COC coach Greg Herrick said.

The Cougars have won 26 consecutive home games dating back to a March 1999 second-round regional playoff loss to Santa Ana.

--No pressure: Herrick said he made it clear to his players the ramifications ramifications nplAuswirkungen pl  of last Saturday night's game.

``I asked them before the game: 'Do you want to make history, or do you want to be history?' ''

The Cougars responded. Natalie Avanecy had a career-high 16 assists and committed just one turnover. Vonetta Lanier scored 30 points. Avanecy leads the conference in assists and Lanier is the team's leading scorer.

--Kentfield key: Perhaps the most encouraging development in Saturday's game was Brianna Kentfield's standout play. Kentfield, COC's 6- foot-2 sophomore center from Hart High of Newhall, had 17 points and seven rebounds. Her point total was her highest since she scored 27 against Santa Ana in a 70-66 loss.

COC will need the same type of effort from Kentfield in the playoffs, Herrick said.

``She's going to have to play big because we're going to be up against some size,'' Herrick said.

--Costly setback: The men's basketball team's 62-50 loss to Bakersfield cost the Cougars a playoff berth.

COC (11-19, 6-6) had a losing record, but so did 17 of the 64 teams selected to the state tournament. In the Southern California regionals, six teams have losing records. The North Region, which only has 35 eligibile teams, has 11 losing teams in its playoffs, including Siskyous (4-23).

Nic Echevestre, a 6-4 sophomore (Saugus) had one of his best games with 17 points and nine rebounds.

But the absence of 6-6 sophomore forward Nana Gbewonyo, the team's leading scorer, and 6-5 freshman forward Ricardo Suazo, one of COC's best low-post defenders, proved costly. Both players were suspended one game after being ejected in the team's previous game against Citrus.

--Fund-raiser: COC is hosting a golf tournament Monday to raise funds for the men' and women's golf teams. Check in time for the tournament is 9:15 a.m., with the first tee off scheduled for 10 a.m. The entry fee is $130.
