women's soccer final fours. She has a young team this year, with seven freshmen starting or seeing significant playing time, but it might be better than the 2003 semifinalist and 2004 finalist.

``I think on paper it's a good team. ... It's a team with a lot of potential,'' said Ellis, whose team is 5-1 after losing to Penn State and beating Colorado in last weekend's UCLA Women's Cup. ``It's just blending 10 freshmen, and getting the ones expected to play used to the quicker pace.''

Some of the freshmen have had no problems. Kara Lang Kara Elise Lang (b. October 22, 1986 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada) is a renowned Canadian soccer player. Lang is, at 20, already Canada's fourth-leading all-time international women's goalscorer. , who has started for Canada's national team since she was 15, has scored four goals in four games. Christina DiMartino, a U.S. youth national teams veteran, has looked good as a wide midfielder. Erin Hardy, a natural center back, also is starting, forced to outside back by an injury to Bristyn Davis, UCLA's top scorer last season whom Ellis plans to use at right back.

Other freshmen seeing time include Oaks Christian of Westlake Village product Caitlin MacKechnie and Malibu High grad Catherine Calvert in midfield.

``(MacKechnie) is very technical, good on the ball, but she wants to take on (defenders) wherever,'' Ellis said. ``We've just got to (show her): `This is where you can dance; this is where you need to play (the ball) quickly.''

Ellis is high on Calvert, a holding midfielder with great speed and ``a hardness to her.''

The overtime loss to Penn State dropped the Bruins from third to sixth in Soccer America's rankings. They'll get another big test Friday night at No. 4 Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba
