COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: SCHUBERT LEAVES USC TO LEAD U.S.

Mark Schubert Mark Schubert was the head coach for both the University of Southern California men's and women's swim teams. He previously coached at the University of Texas from 1989 to 1992 where he coached NCAA champions such as Lee Ann Fetter and Whitney Hedgepeth [1] .  will leave as coach of USC's swim teams to become national team head coach and general manager for USA Swimming USA Swimming is the National Governing Body for competitive swimming in the United States. It is charged with selecting the United States Olympic Swimming team, and any other teams which officially represent the United States, as well as the overall organization and operation of .

Schubert, with a contract through 2013, will start his Los Angeles-based job in May. He will serve as the head coach of the national team at international meets, working with the appointed men's and women's coaches. He also will represent the United States' technical interests nationally and internationally.

``Mark Schubert is the most respected coach on any pool deck in the world,'' USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus said. ``Hiring him is the equivalent of hiring the Mike Krzyzewski Michael William Krzyzewski (ʃəʃɛfˈskiˌ; in American English transliteration "shuh-shef-skee"; born February 13, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois), often referred to as Coach "K"  of basketball.''

Schubert, USC's coach for 14 years, has served on every U.S. Olympic coaching staff since 1980. He was head coach of the women's team in 1992 and 2004 and led the men's team in 2000.

Although born in Hawaii, she grew up in Southern California.

     (USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. ), Nicole Powell (Stanford) and Tanja Kostic (Oregon State). Also on the first team: UCLA's Noelle Quinn and Lisa Willis and USC's Eshaya Murphy, a former Montclair Prep of Panorama City star.

    --Former Palmdale High star Crystal McCutcheon, a senior guard at Long Beach State, is the Big West Conference's women's Player of the Year. Cal State Northridge sophomore Katie Holloway is the Sixth Woman of the Year.

    Other local players on the All-Big West team are UC Irvine second-teamer Kelly Cochran (Chaminade of West Hills) and UC Riverside honorable mention Seyram Gbewonyo (Sylmar), both All-Freshman selections. Men's second-teamers include UC Santa Barbara's Cecil Brown (Canoga Park) and Cal Poly's Dawin Whiten (Monroe of North Hills).

    Cal State Northridge received three All-Big West honorable mentions in men's hoops (Calvin Chitwood, Mike Efevberha and Jonathan Heard) and one in women's (Jamie McCaa).

    --Pepperdine's Kelsey Ball (Defensive Player of the Year) and Loyola Marymount's Ashlee Dunlop (Newcomer of the Year) won West Coast Conference women's awards. The All-WCC first team features Dunlap and Pepperdine's Jasmane Clarendon and Daphanie Kennedy. Another Waves star, Jessica Ross, is an All-Freshman selection.

    LMU's Matthew Knight, Wes Wardrop and Brandon Worthy were men's first-team All-West Coast Conference picks. Pepperdine's Michael Gerrity made the All-Freshman team.
