COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: HANSON STILL PART OF LMU.

Byline: Scott French Staff Writer

These are tough times for the Loyola Marymount women's soccer program. Jessica Hanson, a starting midfielder/defender the past three seasons with the Lions, was killed last month in a car accident, and her presence is everywhere around Sullivan Field.

The players warm up in T-shirts with Hanson's name and number, and a patch on their jerseys - over their hearts - is emblazoned simply: ``Jessica #4.''

``We have our saying: 'We're playing with 12 (players),' '' senior forward Kelly Lewandowski said following LMU's 1-0 victory Sunday over Georgia. ``And we are. She will always be with us.''

``It's hard,'' Lions coach Gregg Murphy Gregg Murphy is a multiple Emmy Award-winning sports journalist and an integral part of CN8's highly regarded sports coverage. ''I think we're handling it the best way we can, but there's still some high moments and some low moments.''

Hanson, a left-sided midfielder and left back, played in 59 games, starting 47, in three seasons with the Lions.

``She was a world-class player in our minds - not in her mind, not yet,'' Murphy said. ``When she played for the U.S. in Mexico in July, I think just then she realized how good she could be.''

The Lions missed Hanson on the field at season's start. They played six overtime games, twice losing leads in the final seconds of regulation, before last weekend's victories over Oakland (Mich.) and Georgia. Hanson, the team says, deserves some credit for the victories.

The placement of the uniform patch is symbolic.

``I think she was the heart of the team,'' Lewandowski said. ``She was always that one player that everyone looked up to. ... Everybody loved her.''
