COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: FOR A REAL RIVALRY, SEE OXY-POMONA.

Byline: Scott French Staff Writer

EAGLE ROCK - The Southland's oldest college football rivalry is, as might be expected, steeped in tradition and lore, firing up alumni from two great academic institutions in an annual showdown for, at the least, bragging rights.

USC-UCLA? Mere upstarts.

Occidental and Pomona colleges have been battling on the gridiron since 1895, 34 years before the Trojans and Bruins first tangled, and Saturday afternoon's showdown at Merritt Field in Claremont will be the 107th meeting.

At stake, since 1941, is ``The Drum,'' on which the scores of the first 106 meetings are written. Oxy (6-0), ranked seventh in NCAA NCAA

, leads the series 57-46-3 and has won four of the past five years.

``It's a great rivalry,'' says Dale Widolff, in his 24th year as Occidental head coach and 26th with the Tigers. ``It's bigger for our alums, just because it was a big, big game for them. ... But our kids like to see 'The Drum.' They want to keep `The Drum.' ''

The game against Redlands, usually for the SCIAC SCIAC SIGINT Correlation Integration & Analysis Capability  title, has supplanted the Pomona rivalry for Oxy's football team, Widolff says. The Tigers beat Redlands last weekend.

Pomona, which has competed as Pomona-Pitzer since 1975, most anticipates its showdown with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, with which it forms the five Claremont colleges Claremont Colleges, at Claremont, Calif.; including five liberal arts and sciences colleges and two graduate schools; founded 1925, known until 1961 as the Associated Colleges at Claremont. Their history began with Pomona College (inc. .

Southern Californians will follow L.A.'s other big showdown more closely, but the alumni and fans of Oxy and Pomona know their rivalry has something USC-UCLA never will.

``They can say what they want,'' Widolff says, ``but ours is older. And it will always be older. They can play a lot of times, but they're still not going to catch us.''
