The board discussed Monday its option of exercising eminent domain eminent domain, the right of a government to force the owner of private property sell it if it is needed for a public use. The college has been looking at the Adventist Medical Building on South Chevy Chase Chevy Chase (chĕv`ē), town (1990 pop. 8,559), Montgomery co., W central Md., a residential suburb of Washington, D.C.; founded as a village, inc. 1914. for a number of years - initially as a rental space, then later as a purchase, even agreeing on a $12.5 million price at one point, said Larry Serot, executive vice president of the college. ``We were notified they were no longer interested in selling the property to us,'' Serot said. ``We hired a firm to assist us in exploring those options (of exercising eminent domain).'' Hospital representatives attended the meeting but made no comment. Eminent domain is the power of public agencies to acquire private property for public use upon payment of just compensation. Serot said that the college has a significant need to provide additional facilities in south Glendale for existing students. |
