Calling it a ``grant for the future,'' Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  officials announced that they will receive $100,000 to create a ``model distance library'' service with three other colleges and the Los Angeles County library system.

The idea is to allow a student at one campus to access information at another college.

``It's a grant for the future,'' said Lancaster Mayor Frank Roberts, who helped write the grant application before retiring as a dean from AVC in August. ``In the next four to five years you'll see library collections totally on disc.''

AVC received a $40,000 check Monday to purchase five computers and hardware for the library, establish Internet links and provide training for users. The rest of the grant will be paid out in 1997.

``We particularly like this project because it ties in the latest technical innovations with education,'' said GTE spokesman John Dokken.

A consortium of representatives from each of the institutions will determine what type of links they want to create. The goal is to create the model distance library within two years, said AVC President Linda Spink.

The model distance library is the latest in a series of projects to improve the offerings of the $5.9 million AVC library, which opened in 1994.

In January the state provided $405,000 for books, and later this month the library will become automated, with its card catalog and other information available by computer.

``In six months it will be a very different library,'' Spink said.
