COLLEGE GETS GRANT TO TRAIN WORKERS.

VALENCIA - The College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  Employee Training Institute has received an 18-month contract to help Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  employers train their workers.

California's Employee Training Panel has awarded the community college a grant of more than $436,000 that will help subsidize sub·si·dize

 training for nearly 600 workers over the next two years. This is the fifth consecutive contract of this type that the college has received since 1996.

The training focuses on skills improvement, such as training on specific machinery, or on increasing the knowledge base of trainees through improved leadership skills, teaching employees about strategic business planning, and exposing workers to the concepts of lean manufacturing Lean manufacturing is the production of goods using less of everything compared to mass production: less human effort, less manufacturing space, less investment in tools, and less engineering time to develop a new product.  and best laboratory practices.

Basic knowledge skills are also taught in classes such as electricity for maintenance workers and similar courses.

A key element of training provided by the Employee Training Institute is that it customizes training to the needs of businesses. The institute works with the Valencia Industrial Association to identify the broad range of local industry training needs.

Institute representatives meet with management, supervisors and employees of the businesses requesting training, and then craft training to address those needs.

The training programs are generally available to manufacturers, companies with their corporate headquarters in California and firms with out-of-state competition.
