COLLEGE FOOTBALL SMITH SPARKS USU VICTORY EX-AV HIGH LINEBACKER A TERROR FOR UTAH ST.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

Heavy underdog Southern Utah was hanging around in its game at Utah State Saturday. The Division I-A Aggies trailed Division I-AA Southern Utah 6-0 at halftime. The Thunderbirds then opened the second half with an impressive march deep into USU USU Usually

That's when Cade Smith put an end to Southern Utah's upset hopes with the first of two critical defensive plays to spark the Aggies' 30-14 win in Logan, Utah Logan is a city in Cache County, Utah, in the United States. ``I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,'' Smith said.

The Thunderbirds' drive to open the third quarter reached the Aggies' 16. On third-and-1, Southern Utah running back Clay Denton was hit by Utah State linebacker Blake Eagal.

Brent Passey stripped the ball from Denton, Smith picked up the fumble and raced 63 yards before being tripped up at the Southern Utah 16.

``I saw Passey hit and the ball fly,'' Smith said. ``I picked it up and tried to score. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Cal quarterback Kyle Boller Kyle Bryan Boller (born June 17 1981 in Burbank, California) is an American football quarterback who plays for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Ravens in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft out of California.  (Hart) approved of the idea.

``When I mess up, I get to talk to (Hagen) on the phone,'' Boller said. ``He's not there to yell in my face.''

Boller, Cal's starter as a freshman in a difficult 1999 season, had his good and bad moments in Saturday's 24-21 victory over Utah in Berkeley.

Boller suffered from an injury-depleted wide-receiver corps last year, but the Bears brought in a young group of wideouts that should get better with experience.

``They're a great group of guys. They know how to win and how to play,'' Boller said. ``I'm real happy with them. You can throw a ball up and have 100 percent confidence that they're gonna go up and try to catch it.''

Hagen's switch from the field to the booth isn't the only new wrinkle for Boller. Cal started the game in a no-huddle offense and periodically ran it throughout the game. It's a concept Boller is used to from his prep days quarterbacking the Indians.

``I love doing this,'' Boller said. ``It's like high school.''

--Can't knock him out: Nevada quarterback David Neill David Neill (born July 17 1980[]) was an American college football quarterback for the University of Nevada. In 1998 he set an NCAA record for most touchdown passes in a season by a freshman with 29 thrown.  (Hart), sacked a merciless 15 times in Saturday's 41-10 loss to No. 22 Texas Christian, gained one more member to his fan club.

``David Neill is a tough sucker,'' Horned Frogs coach Dennis Franchione Dennis Wayne Franchione (born March 28, 1951 in Girard, Kansas), commonly known as Coach Fran, is an American football coach who is currently the head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies football team in College Station, Texas.  said. ``To get sacked (15) times and hit as many times as he did. . . . ``I don't think I've ever been so tired after a football game as I am now,'' Neill said, insisting the beating TCU administered won't get him down.

``I took a couple hits to the body. I took a couple hits to the head. I'm going to play with broken arms, broken legs. They'll have to drag me off.''

--Odds and ends: Redshirting was not an option for Idaho freshman linebacker Jordan Lampos (Westlake). Lampos has appeared in both the Vandals' games, registering one unassisted tackle. . . . Nevada senior rover Christian Broussard (Royal) was back in the Wolf Pack's starting lineup for Saturday's game against TCU. Broussard missed the season opener serving a suspension. . . . Matt Leonard (Palmdale) returned to action for Stanford. The sophomore defensive lineman had one tackle for a loss of two yards, but Leonard's Cardinal was upset 40-27 by San Jose State. . . . San Diego State is 0-2 and was pounded 49-13 by Illinois Saturday. But Aztecs defensive back Will Demps (Highland) has done his part. Demps is second on the team in total tackles (20), including three for loss, and two pass breakups.
