COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: BACK TO THE BENCH FORMER HART STAR MATTER LOSES PLAYING TIME.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

Stanford's quarterback rotation has turned into one, leaving redshirt freshman Kyle Matter (Hart) on the bench behind incumbent Chris Lewis Chris Lewis may refer to:

Matter was given early opportunities, first when Lewis was suspended for the opener at Boston College Boston College, main campus at Chestnut Hill, Mass.; coeducational; Jesuit; est. and opened 1863. The opportunity to play an entire game was a plus for him.''

Foster leads line revival: Josh Foster and his fellow offensive linemen at Colorado have come a long way since 37 yards on 35 carries.

The Buffaloes expected to run wild this season with their top tailbacks, Chris Brown Chris Brown may refer to:'''

But Colorado's offensive line had failed to jell the first three weeks during a 1-2 start. It bottomed out in a 40-3 home loss to USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  on Sept. 21. The Buffaloes rushed 35 times and gained a meager mea·ger also mea·gre

Foster (Paraclete High) had never been a starter before this season. The senior, though has been a key player all year as Colorado's regular strongside tackle. Colorado recovered from the USC debacle to post convincing wins at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

and over Kansas State last week in the Big 12 Conference opener.

After Colorado was held to just 61 yards of offense against USC, it was a different story last Saturday in a 35-31 win over No. 12 Kansas State. Foster helped protect quarterback Robert Hodge, who threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns.

running game. Brown ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns as Colorado finished with 483 yards. Foster and the Buffaloes' additional linemen received plenty of praise this week in preparation for today's game at Kansas.

``There is no question that they are (coming together). We've got that cohesion from a year ago that was missing earlier in August,'' Buffaloes coach Gary Barnett said. ``We will have the same starters for the sixth week now, and when that happens, you get some good cohesion.''

--Curtis cuts up Aggies: Curtis Brown (Paraclete) might be a freshman. However, he understood the size advantage his Brigham Young offensive line had over Utah State during his most successful first collegiate start last week at Utah State.

Brown, filling in for injured Marcus Whalen, might never lose his starting job again after running for 217 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-34 win. Whalen, though, is expected to play this week.

``We knew we were bigger and more physical up front,'' Brown said. ``We just felt it was going to be a matter of time before things started opening up. Coach (Gary) Crowton believed in me and we have some great blockers.''

Brown will have to produce big numbers on the ground again tonight when the Cougars play unbeaten Air Force.

--Offense to defense: At New Mexico, Justin Mobley was the Lobos' quarterback for a time. The Antelope Valley High graduate played nine games there in 1999 but lacked playing time thereafter and was switched to wide receiver. But he transferred to Division I-AA Montana State and is now a starting safety as a senior.

In four games, Mobley has recorded 17 tackles, including one for a loss.

--That's the fact, Lumberjack: Northern Arizona defensive back Jason Jacobs (Lancaster), who transferred from Oregon State, has played in all five of the Lumberjacks' games and has recorded five total tackles. Jacobs also has one tackle for a loss.

Northern Arizona is ranked eighth in the nation in the Division I-AA Top 25.

--Backup role: Weber State junior Ahmad Milby (Hart/College of the Canyons) is listed as the second-string center for the Wildcats but is getting playing time on the offensive line.
