COLLEGE FOOTBALL; CLU OFFENSE COMES TO LIFE; BACKUP ODENATH LEADS KINGSMEN OVER TOREROS.

Byline: Heather Gripp and Jim Inghram Daily News Staff Writer

All year the defense has been sturdy for Cal Lutheran. It's the offense that has been struggling.

Against San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  on Saturday the defense was typically stingy stin·gy

toward the Toreros, but this time instead of sputtering A popular method for adhering thin films onto a substrate. Sputtering is done by bombarding a target material with a charged gas (typically argon) which releases atoms in the target that coats the nearby substrate. It all takes place inside a magnetron vacuum chamber under low pressure. , the offense discovered a new weapon in the shape of 5-foot-10, 175-pound backup quarterback Nick Odenath.

The move was planned, with Odenath getting practice reps leading up to the game against San Diego. The results, while not perfect, were encouraging.

Odenath, of Orange, completed 6 of 8 passes for 51 yards in the 26-13 Cal Lu victory. He had an interception, but it was his scrambling and ability to run the option that gave the offense a lift. He led the offense on two scoring drives and scored on a touchdown on a 9-yard run.

Odenath gained 61 yards on eight carries, getting some critical first downs and putting the San Diego defense on its heels.

``He really provided a spark,'' Cal Lutheran coach Scott Squires said. ``He did what we wanted and spurred our offense.''

Odenath's playing time wasn't a mark against Zack Hernandez's play. It was a situation where Squires wanted to get a look at his backup.

Hernandez completed 6 of 13 for 72 yards and an interception and rushed for 14 yards on four carries.

There is no quarterback controversy, but rather a situation where teams will have to prepare for both.

``I knew I was going to play some, because I got a lot of reps in practice,'' Odenath said. ``Everything I worked on in practice was used in the game. All I really had to do was go out there and execute.''

Asked if he would like to start, Odenath said: ``If I was greedy, sure I'd love to, but I want to do what is best for the team.''

Geisler showed his leg strength, with most of his kickoffs going into the end zone. Squires didn't indicate whether the switch was permanent or for just one game.
