COLLEGE FOOTBALL: RESERVES COME TO THE DEFENSE.Byline: Heather Gripp and Jim Inghram Daily News Staff Writer All year long the one constant for Cal Lutheran has been its defense. Aside from the breakdown in the Claremont-Mudd loss, the Kingsmen's defense has carried the club in its three victories. Going into Saturday's game with Occidental oc·ci·den·tal or Oc·ci·den·tal adj. Garcia and Cooper were suited up and could have played if the results had warranted, but reserves Nick Cappelletti and Mike McErlane played so well that Garcia and Cooper were afforded an extra week of rest. ``It was a good opportunity for the young guys to show what they can do,'' said coach Scott Squires. ``All of them played well.'' Cappelletti and McErlane, both freshman, did their part in stopping the run and were extremely active and aggressive. Cappelletti, from Santa Margarita Santa Margarita ("Saint Margaret") may refer to:

This often occurs if the opposing team's defensive line or linebackers are able to quickly get past blocking . McErlane, from Yucca Valley, had eight tackles, including two for losses. He also combined with Cappelletti on a quarterback sack. McErlane, at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, looks the linebacker part, but at 5-foot-11 and 178, Cappelletti does not. ``He doesn't look like he should be playing there,'' Squires said, ``but the guy makes plays. He's all over the place and has good strength and excellent speed.'' Other non-traditional defensive contributors included sophomore defensive back Ricardo Robinson (5 tackles), junior linebacker Matt Hacker (2 tackles), junior linebacker Brett Phillips Brett Adam Phillips (born November 23, 1974) is an Australian radio personality. Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California. :Moorpark coach Jim Bittner summed it up best. ``We weren't happy with anything but the score,'' he said after his Raiders pulled out a 19-18 win Saturday at West L.A. The Raiders took over first place in the Western State Confernce Southern Division, but could see their title hopes dashed if they continue to play the way they did against the Oilers. ``We were scrambling from the beginning to the end,'' Bittner said. ``The only real positive thing that came out of this game was we never lost composure.'' West L.A. controlled the game for more than 12 of the first quarter's 15 minutes as Moorpark struggled to hold onto the ball. A fumble to open the second half was the Raiders' fourth turnover of the game. The Oiler defense didn't allow the Raiders past the West L.A. 43 until the final play of the first half. Moorpark's usually explosive running game was held to 31 yards in the half and 77 overall. The Raiders were forced to go with their passing game and found an answer to their problems in Bryan Spencer. After completing his only pass of the first half, the sophomore returned for Moorpark's third series of the second half; within four plays, the Raiders had their first score. Spencer completed 8 of 9 passes for 171 yards. ``I knew they had a stacked front,'' Spencer said. ``They were basically telling us we had to throw the ball.'' Moorpark rallied from a 12-0 halftime deficit for its sixth consecutive victory, an outcome that could have been different if the Oilers hadn't failed to convert on all three of their PATs. ``It's a huge win,'' Bittner said. ``I told the guys we could either be the masters of our own destiny or need someone else to help us out.'' |
