Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

Kyle Matter capped off a brilliant two-year run as Hart High's starting quarterback on Friday with a near perfect performance.

Matter threw just four incomplete passes in a 34-11 rout of Mira Costa in the Southern Section Division III

 championship game.

Matter's predecessors in Hart's rich quarterbacking fraternity didn't have such happy endings to the 2000 season.

California sophomore Kyle Boller Kyle Bryan Boller (born June 17 1981 in Burbank, California) is an American football quarterback who plays for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Ravens in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft out of California.  and Nevada junior David Neill David Neill (born July 17 1980[]) was an American college football quarterback for the University of Nevada. In 1998 he set an NCAA record for most touchdown passes in a season by a freshman with 29 thrown.  both struggled through losing seasons. Boller's Bears finished 3-8. Neill's WolfPack limped home 2-10.

Boller, a celebrated recruit when he arrived in Berkeley in 1999, was criticized heavily by the Bay Area media and Bears' fans. Cal was in several close games but suffered frustrating losses to ranked teams Washington, Oregon State and Oregon.

``I just didn't feel like we were making the type of progress that I hoped to see,'' said Cal coach Tom Holmoe Thomas Allen Holmoe (born March 7, 1960 in Los Angeles, California) is a former professional American football player who played with the San Francisco 49ers from 1983 to 1989. . ``We did improve on offense this season... But there wasn't the type of consistency that a good offense needs to show.''

Boller had just a 104.49 efficiency rating, threw for 2,121 yards and 15 touchdowns. Cal fired offensive coordinator An offensive coordinator typically refers to the coach on a football team in the National Football League or College football who is in charge of the offense. This position aids the head coach by designing and scripting plays, delegating work to offensive position coaches during  Steve Hagen.

Perhaps a new coach running the offense combined with a season of learning will give Boller the breakout 2001 season Cal fans have been waiting for.

``I'm focused on hiring a coordinator with a track record, somebody who has the experience to take us to a new level,'' Holmoe said.

Neill was battered all season operating behind an inexperienced offensive line. His injury list included a concussion, jammed hip, bruised right shoulder, sprained right wrist and sprained ankle A sprained ankle, also known as a ankle sprain, ankle injury or ankle ligament injury, is a common medical condition where one or more of the ligaments of the ankle is torn or partially torn. .

Neill finished with 2,334 yards passing and 13 touchdowns. The junior surpassed the school's career records for total offense, passing attemptsand passing yards. He was named Nevada's MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip. .

Here's a look at other local college players' performances this season:

Having waited through three years at two junior colleges and his redshirt season, Wynn was one of the Pac-10's most productive receivers in 2000.

He was second in the conference with 87.6 yards per game. He had 52 receptions for 964 yards, the fourth most in school history.

Wynn also finished with four 100-yard receiving games and was named to the All-Pac-10 second team.

--Vincent Sandoval (Oregon State): Junior running back Ken Simonton rushed for 1,474 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Fiesta Bowl-bound Beavers. Sandoval (Palmdale) gets an assist for Simonton's prolific year.
