Will, a former walk-on, was a two-time All-Mountain West safety for the Aztecs. ``I felt a little pressure,'' said Marcus Demps, on following his brother. ``Because you know you have to live up to the expectations, 'Will he be as good as his brother?' It's just something you live with.'' Marcus, who was a Daily News All-Area selection, started attracting attention the summer before his senior year. ``Any time you have an athlete like that, it's going to open any recruiter's eye,'' Highland assistant coach Bret Pape said. ``And with his brother being a walk-on like that and then making it to the Ravens, they said, 'Well, let's give this guy a chance.' '' Marcus is happy to be hanging by the beach, working out every day, running three days a week and lifting four. ``Summer workouts are like a voluntary/mandatory thing,'' Marcus said. ``If you want to contend for a spot in the fall, then you stay around for the summer.'' Demps redshirted last season after he broke his finger on a hard hit in practice. Before he got hurt, Demps traveled for two games with the Aztecs. After the injury, he focused on healing his hand and getting stronger. ``I really thought it helped me out,'' Demps said. ``People think when you're a redshirt you don't do anything. But you're lifting four days a week. You're going to get stronger. It really helps you out.'' Demps, 6-foot and 185 pounds, is No. 2 on the Aztecs' depth chart at free safety behind returning starter Marviel Underwood Marviel Underwood (born February 17, 1982 in Oakland, California) is an American football safety who is currently a free agent. Demps wants to play at free safety but also figures to see playing time on special teams. Pape is confident his former star soon will be making key stops for the Aztecs. ``You throw a ball over the middle, he's just as likely to come down with it as the receiver,'' he said. Demps is majoring in social work and is interested in a criminal-justice career. In a few weeks, he'll be looking forward to seeing his parents at the Aztec Family Day Scrimmage. The family should be veterans of the event by the time Marcus finishes his career. ``The offense scrimmages against the defense for like 80 plays,'' Marcus said. ``It's just a real fun day.'' |
