The Antelope Valley
 and Chaffey colleges History

The school was first founded in Ontario in 1883, when city founders and brothers George and William Chaffey donated land and established an endowment for a private college.

is No. 2 in total offense in the Foothill Conference and is 1-1 (2-2 overall). Chaffey has the top-ranked offense but is 0-2 (1-3).

What has gone wrong? For AVC, a tendency to fall behind early. For Chaffey, defense.

AVC's defense has been solid. Its pass defense is ranked No. 2 in the conference; although its run defense is seventh among nine teams, it has given up an average of only 19 points.

In last week's 28-14 loss to College of the Desert, AVC's defense slipped but certainly didn't cave in. That distinction was left to the offense, which gained 397 yards but could manage only two touchdowns - including a meaningless one in the final minutes - because of key penalties and turnovers that are killing promising drives.

The result is that the Marauders continually fall behind and must play catchup catch·up

, which increases the chances of making mistakes and puts too much pressure on quarterback Justin Holtfreter and the defense.

``We need to come out strong in the first half, give our defense help,'' said Holtfreter, who threw three interceptions last week.

AVC has relied heavily on the run. Running back Jason Anderson

has gotten the bulk of the carries and is piling up big numbers. He ranks third in the conference with 450 yards, averaging 112.5 yards.

However, the running game hasn't done enough and the passing game has failed to compensate late in the game.

``We need to get the passing going, mix it up with the run and keep the defense guessing,'' receiver Andre Velazquez said.

``. . . We need to get the quarterback to read the defenses better. He's got to start looking and the line needs to give him more time,'' added Velazquez, who said Holtfreter ends up throwing the ball away to avoid being sacked.

The natural consequence of the offense's inability to finish off drives is an abundance of pressure on the defense.

``It's hard to win a ballgame if you start (scoring) in the second half,'' linebacker David Fetters fet·ter

Chaffey's defense, No. 2 in the conference, has played poorly when it counts. Against San Bernardino Valley The San Bernardino Valley is the hub of Southern California's Inland Empire. It is drained by the Santa Ana River. It is bordered on the north by the San Bernardino Mountains and the eastern San Gabriel Mountains, on the east by the San Jacinto Mountains, and on the south and west  last week, the Panthers were leading at halftime 22-0 before mistakes cost them the game 29-22.

Panthers coach Carl Beach said part of the problem is a lack of maturity. Only one starting defender returned from last season.

Chaffey has the conference's top running back in Dameon Hunter, who has 443 yards and five touchdowns in three games. The Panthers' other offensive threat is David Akers David Roy Akers (born December 9, 1974, in Lexington, Kentucky) is an American football placekicker who currently plays for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was named conference player of the week for his 135 yards receiving and two touchdowns last week.

``We expect a tough game. They are better than their record indicates,'' AVC coach Brent Carder said. ``We are going into the game expecting them to play very well.''

Injury report: Velazquez, who broke his wrist before the season, said it is improving. He said increased strength has allowed him to work more in the weight room.

He had five receptions and a touchdown last week. . . .

Wide receiver DaJon Wright will not suit up against Chaffey. He suffered a knee injury against Desert.

ANTELOPE VALLEY COLLEGE Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  (2-2, 1-1) vs. CHAFFEY (1-3, 0-2)

Where:Marauder Stadium, 1 p.m.

Series:AVC leads 11-4-1

Outlook:Chaffey has the top-ranked offense but an 0-2 Foothill Conference record. Turnovers and penalities have cost the Panthers games in which they led. The conference's leading runner, Dameon Hunter, expects to be in the lineup after missing last week's game with an ankle injury. For AVC, offensive struggles have cost it games in which the defense has held top offenses to low scoring. The Marauders again will switch between conference-leading scorer Jason Anderson on the ground and the arm of Justin Holtfreter.
