Jazz History Fete in the Big Easy

The New Orleans Jazz New Orleans Jazz can refer to:
  • Utah Jazz - a professional National Basketball Association franchise that used to exist in New Orleans as the New Orleans Jazz.
  • Dixieland - a style of jazz music.
 Dance Project 1999 opened its celebration of the heritage of jazz dance, June 11 to 19, at Newcomb/Tulane University in New Orleans. The third annual summer dance workshop featured nationally and internationally recognized guest teachers and offered classes and performance opportunities in tap, jazz, musical theater, modern, ballet, Afro-Haitian, and African dance.

Heritage weekends included a hoofers program, with Jimmy Slyde, Jeannie Hill, Buster Brown, and Brenda Bufalino; a celebration of the movement traditions of New Orleans; and a tribute to swing dance with Frankie Manning and films by Emie Smith.

Beverly A. Trask, director of the project and head of Newcomb College's dance program, also brought in Cornelius Carter, Ed Kresley, Ausettua Amor Amenkum, Kari Knudson, Kwame A. Ross, and Wade Madsen as guest faculty.

CalArts Spring Dance Concert

U.S. private institution of higher learning in Valencia. Created in 1961 through the merger of two other art institutes, it was the first in the U.S.
 in Valencia presented its spring concert from April 29 to May 8. Two programs were given, one featuring the work of fifteen students, and one of faculty works by Gall Chodera, Tina Yuan, and Douglas Nielsen. Choreographer Patricia Kenny created a new work for graduating students that was presented on both programs.

Kenny has performed and taught nationally and internationally for seven seasons with Parsons Dance Company Parsons Dance is a contemporary dance company founded by choreographer David Parsons. The company tours nationally and internationally, and includes an annual season in New York, where they are based.

The company consists of ten full-time dancers.
. She has worked with New York City Ballet New York City Ballet, one of the foremost American dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine as the Ballet Society in 1946. , Ballet du Rhin, Pennsylvania Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theatre, and the Louisville and Atlanta ballets.

CalArts has a multidisciplinary approach to studying the arts through its six related schools: Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music, and Theatre.

Modern in Santa Monica

Zari is a type of thread made of fine gold or silver wire used in traditional Indian and Pakistani garments. This thread is woven into fabrics, primarily made of silk to create intricate patterns.

SMC's dance program offers a two-year dance major earning an Associate in Arts degree as well as offering elective courses and performance opportunities. The A.A. degree requirements total sixty units.

Netherlands Comes to Julliard

The Juilliard School, under the direction of Benjamin Harkarvy, has invited Hans van Manen Hans van Manen (Nieuwer-Amstel, Netherlands, 11 July 1932) is a Dutch ballet dancer, choreographer and photographer.

He is a son of a German housemaid. He studied under Sonia Gaskell, Françoise Adret and Nora Kiss. Hans van Manen wrote many ballets.
, the principal choreographer for Netherlands Dance Theater, to work with Juilliard dancers next year. In his nearly forty-year career, mostly with NDT NDT Newfoundland Daylight Time  where he was artistic director for ten years, van Manen has created more than one hundred ballets, putting him in the forefront of the international dance world in melding classical and modern dance forms.

The project begins in September when two of van Manen's assistants will come to New York City to work with the students and prepare excerpts from several ballets for public performance in December.

Van Manen will also be present prior to the performances to work with students at all levels. The project culminates in the presentation of one of van Manen's full-length ballets at the Juilliard spring dance concert in February 2000.
