According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. will start as early as 5:30 a.m. to attract students either headed to work or seeking the rest of the day off for summer break. Early bird classes, starting at 5:30 to 7 a.m., include academic courses such as speech, college writing, U.S. history and statistics as well as fitness courses. About two dozen early classes will be offered. Summer schedules will be mailed to residents in the next few weeks and the first session will start May 23, with later starting dates in June and July. Among the offerings are lower-division classes for transfer to four-year colleges; self-improvement and leisure topics; and a new listing of two-week ``institutes.'' Mostly scheduled from May 23 to June 4, institutes cover a range of subjects including Web design, health and fitness, art history with field trips to area museums, wine and food appreciation, Italian language Italian language, member of the Romance group of the Italic subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages (see Romance languages).
