According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. celebrated a big victory Wednesday after voters passed a local bond worth $160 million and a state bond that promises the college about $35 million more for renovations. Measure M, which also will cost the average property owner about $30 annually, was passed with 63 percent of the votes. The college also receive about $35 million from Proposition 1D, a state bond that will provide California's community colleges with $1.5 billion. The measure won with 54 percent of the votes. College of the Canyons spokeswoman Sue Bozman said the past two months were exhausting, but worth it. ``We were all doing our own jobs and in addition giving hundreds of volunteer hours to the college,'' Bozman said. Bozman said volunteers started Election Day working the polls and making ``nagging'' calls to voters to make sure they realized the importance of voting yes on Measure M. ``We needed to educate the community and let them know there was a huge need -- that is a huge job to do in two months.'' No formal opposition surfaced in the campaign. Measure M will cost taxpayers $9.73 per $100,000 of assessed property value and promises to add classrooms and upgrade aging utilities with considerable funds going to adding facilities for crowded study fields such as health care, law enforcement and computer technology. The bond also will build the first three buildings at the college's new Canyon Country campus, which is currently using portable bungalows as their classrooms. Bozman added that the college will start working strategies soon to form a Measure M Citizens Oversight
