About 15 of the 12-foot-by-60-foot structures have arrived from the Lompoc military base since Monday, facilities dean Jim Schrage said. Nineteen more are expected next week. Officials expect some of the portable buildings may be placed at the college's Valencia campus, but most are intended as temporary classrooms for the proposed Canyon Country Educational Center. The college has been seeking potential sites for the satellite campus - due to open in 2006 - over the past year. It would replace its existing ACCESS center in the Canyon Country Library. Besides serving the city's east side, the new campus will create much- needed space as the main Valencia campus nears capacity by the end of the decade. About 32 percent of the college's students live in the eastern Santa Clarita Valley. Recent studies found that more than 18 percent reside in Canyon Country and nearly 14 percent live in Saugus. Enrollment at the college passed the 14,000 mark, more than double that of a decade ago. The new center would accommodate 4,648 students, exceeding the threshold requirements for new centers.
