COLLEGE BOARD TO INTERVIEW 21 APPLICANTS CANYONS POST TO BE FILLED WEDNESDAY.

VALENCIA -- A congressman's aide, a member of a local school board and an academic are among the 21 applicants for an opening on the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  board.

``We need somebody that is totally committed, that will invest the time in helping to run the college, that has the best interest of students and the district,'' said Bruce Fortine, president of the board.

The applicants include Scott Wilk, 47, an aide to Rep. Howard P. ``Buck'' McKeon, R-Santa Clarita; Steven Tannehill, 53, a member of the Newhall School District The Newhall School District is a school district in the Santa Clarita Valley that serves the Valencia and Newhall communities within the city of Santa Clarita, California, as well as the Stevenson Ranch community in unincorporated Los Angeles County.  board; and Edward Carroll Jr., a part-time faculty member with California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. Wilk said he sees the college as an important contributor to the region's economy, and that he likes how the college is run.

``My role, I think, (is) just go in and be part of the team,'' Wilk said. ``I totally support the vision and the direction they're going.''

Tannehill, who is in his ninth year on the Newhall school board, works at Countrywide Financial Countrywide Financial Corporation (NYSE: CFC) is a diversified financial marketing and service holding company engaged primarily in residential mortgage banking and related businesses.  Corp. ``I've always been a passionate believe in the power of education to change lives and be a positive influence in the community,'' he said.

``While that's not absolutely necessary to do the work, that's an advantage or a different skill set that I would bring to the table,'' he said.

The college board expects to decide Wednesday night, after interviewing all the candidates, who it will select to fill Gillis' seat.
