COLLEGE BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: FLOYD GETS SHARE OF RIBBING.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

The unofficial theme during Wednesday's luncheon for the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  college basketball College basketball most often refers to the American basketball competitive governance structure established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, or NCAA. Floyd was a welcome addition to the room. His introduction by Tommy Hawkins, the master of ceremonies, included a bit on Bibby and a reference to his short tenure as the Sparks coach. Bibby was fired during the season.

``I heard I'm the first guy to be here in eight years and I didn't know anything about that,'' Floyd said. ``I've been fired twice in the last four years. I'm looking for Looking for

--CSUN update: Coach Bobby Braswell Bobby Braswell, an American basketball coach, is currently the head coach for Cal State Northridge. Braswell was named the fourth head coach in Northridge history on April 30, 1996, succeeding the retired Pete Cassidy.  was unable to attend because one of his close friends is ill. Assistant coach Joel Sobotka attended for Braswell.

The Matadors are preparing for life without four seniors and, perhaps, Calvin Chitwood. Chitwood, one of the Big West's freshman of the year, who is academically ineligible until December and might redshirt.

Last year, CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  started the season 1-7 with eight road games. Sobotka, who's in charge of scheduling, mixed in some home games to start this season.

It's not a surprise that CSUN has a tough time scheduling home games, since it plays in the outdated Northridge Gym that has a capacity of 1,500.

``Our schedule will be a challenge, and we open with USC,'' Sobotka said. ``We're going to Cal and we'll play Pepperdine and we have a couple of good home games. Any home game is a good game.''

--Waves moving: Pepperdine coach Paul Westphal has a young and inexperienced group. He lost his top four returning scorers - three of which were senior starters - and junior guard Alex Acker was drafted by the Detroit Pistons.

Westphal said he liked the young players and knew they'd win some games - he just hoped it would happen this season.

``I saw in one magazine that we were rated 212th,'' Westphal said. ``I'm not griping, but I looked at our schedule and only two teams were ranked (lower) than us. It could be a tough year.''

--Legends award: Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim was named this year's winner of the John Wooden Legends of Coaching award. Boeheim will receive the award during next year's Wooden Award ceremony.

``He fits the criteria right to the top notch,'' said Duke Llewellyn, the award chairman and founder.
